I remember stormy weather
The way the sky looks when it's cold
And you were with me

So unaware of the world

The old man fiddled with the test tubes. His laboratory was messy as usual. Books were lying everywhere. He flipped through “Mummies”, finding the correct page. His daughter, Reiya, stood at one corner. She eyed his father’s assistant nervously. The assistant returned her look with a smile uneasily, and then he asked, “Master, what are you doing?” The old man answered wearily, “the old experiment. The old experiment.” Just then, something exploded in the laboratory, causing everything to catch fire. Reiya screamed. The assistant caught hold of Reiya and his master and ran. When he managed to escape the house, he laid on the ground, panting hard. His left hand is completely unmovable. Reiya’s eyes were shut. His master was lying at the ground, muttering, “Reiya … … Reiya … … No. It – It couldn’t be … …” … …Three years after the incident, the same old man, the one that lost his daughter, the one that made his assistant lose his left arm, was in another house, working on the same experiment that took his daughter’s life. Beside him, a seven-year-old corpse was in a glass coffin, resting soundly. Shouts were heard from the living room. “Professor! It’s time for dinner!” The professor walked up into the living room. “Daddy!” a girl shouted. The professor ignored her daughter and walked over to the dining table. The assistant scooped the little girl up easily. He whispered into her ear, “Freya, come. Let’s eat dinner with your daddy, alright?”“But daddy ignored me again today, Kanoka. Can he be the same again? I’m scared, Kanoka.” Kanoka smiled warmly at Freya. “Freya, your father … … he – he will be okay, soon.” She placed her on her seat on the dining table, then, he proceeded to his own seat. The old man looked at Kanoka and said, “Let’s eat, Kanoka,” and then he turned to the seat next to him, “you too, Reiya.” Freya looked at Kanoka, terror overwhelming her eyes. Kanoka’s face was straight, it was almost impossible to decipher what he was thinking. Almost. His eyes showed happiness. But his expression changed, almost immediately, to a face that showed sympathy.“I’m going to see Reiya … …”the old man mumbled. He walked into his laboratory. Freya stared at the assistant’s face, then to his left arm, then back to the assistant’s face. The assistant smiled coldly at her, sending shivers up Freya’s spine. She knew, deep inside her heart, that after her sister’s death, everything had changed. Her loving father, into an anti-social man. The assistant seemed the same, but he looked different, not just because that his left sleeve had nothing there at all, but his face … … Her father wanted to revive Reiya, he was a mad scientist. Kanoka followed the old man into the laboratory. He is also a scientist. A talented scientist to boot, but why was he following her father? He could make a name in the outside world himself. She stared at the huge living room. She lived in the mansion, all her life, not having any friends, except for Kanoka and her butler, Mr. Kronos. She explored the whole mansion since she had been four, since her sister’s death. She had been lonely. Only one place was left unexplored, the laboratory. Kanoka did not like her being in the laboratory. She had not had the courage to sneak in, but now, she is already seven, and she has the courage. She sneaked into the laboratory, unnoticed. She could already feel the change in atmosphere. She hid behind a wall that separated the living room and the laboratory and she peeked through.Kanoka was scolding someone. “Yes, master.” Master? She peeked a little more. Her father? Her father was calling Kanoka master? “Hmph! That brat! Act a bit madder, will you?” Kanoka slapped the professor, “She’ll find out that her father had died three years ago! And that YOU ARE JUST AN IMPOSTER!” The truth was out. Her father was not mad after all. It was Kanoka. Thinking back, it was obvious, is it not? Kanoka loved Reiya, how could he let her die? Her father, suffered the explosion right in his face, how could he not die, when the explosion took Reiya’s death and Kanoka’s left arm? The truth was always there, there all the time but she was stupid to not discover it, let alone to think that Kanoka was the mad scientist. “The girl! Get her!” She was discovered. Had she thought aloud? She did not run. She stood there and she screamed at Kanoka, tears stung her eyes and she swept it away angrily, “Why, Kanoka? I-I trusted you.”“You trust me? Have you? You trusted me and you come into the laboratory! You are just like your father! Act like you trusted me when you did not!” The imposter grabbed Freya by her arms. “But, why?” Kanoka laughed, “Why? WHY! I loved Reiya! She cannot die! I must revive her. Bring her back to life! She was my life. That idiot, he let her be in the laboratory when I protested! It’s too dangerous I say, but what did he say? ‘It’ll be okay, Kanoka. She will not die with me around.’ And see what became of her? She died! Burned to death! But, I managed to add certain substances into her body that managed to cover over the burned marks.” He walked over to the glass coffin and touched Reiya’s corpse. “And she is so smooth. Smoother than what I expected.” He licked her skin. “Kill her, ‘master’.” Reiya shouted. What happened next was a blur; the imposter took out his knife and stabbed her but due to Reiya’s quick reflexes she struggled out of the imposter’s hands and grabbed the knife. Then, she threw it at the imposter, which the knife struck his chest, and he fell to the floor. “NO! YOU!” But it was too late. Reiya had pounced onto him. Tears trickled down her face and onto Kanoka’s. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry Kanoka but I’m afraid… …” she choked on her own words, and then she knocked Kanoka’s head hard onto a brick. She had killed people. She had no choice. She went to the laboratory table and found petrol and a lighter. She poured petrol on her own body and threw the lighter on the floor. The pain was engulfing her whole mind. She was screaming like she had never before but she manage to say, “I’m sorry. I’m going to apologise to all of you. In hell.” And the girl lived no more. The mad scientist had killed more than one person in the end.
